Technical Documentation & House Plot Development

The Proscenium Theater at Santa Monica, CA

This project involved the complete redevelopment of the technical documentation for a high-utilization proscenium theater serving a public educational institution in Santa Monica, California. The venue supports theatrical productions, concerts, lectures, assemblies, and community events throughout the year, making it one of the most frequently utilized performance spaces within the district.

Following years of renovations and equipment upgrades, the theater's original technical drawings were no longer available, creating significant challenges for maintenance, production planning, and future system development. The objective of this project was to reconstruct an accurate documentation package for the entire venue while developing a standardized House Plot capable of supporting the theater's demanding daily production schedule.

Reconstructing the Venue from the Ground Up

One of the greatest challenges of this project was the complete absence of existing documentation. Due to operational disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, the original construction drawings had been lost before I joined the department. I was subsequently assigned by department leadership to lead the recreation of the theater's technical documentation from the ground up.

Working alongside a team of technicians, I conducted a comprehensive on-site survey of the venue, documenting every architectural dimension, lighting position, catwalk, box boom, lineset, electrical distribution point, and production infrastructure element. Using these field measurements, I recreated the theater entirely in Vectorworks, producing a complete set of professional drafting documents that accurately represent the venue's existing configuration.

Building upon this documentation, I also designed a new standardized House Plot specifically tailored to the operational characteristics of the theater. Rather than creating a production-specific lighting layout, the House Plot was carefully developed around the venue's architectural limitations, available inventory, and the recurring technical requirements of its primary users. The result is a flexible, production-ready lighting system capable of supporting the vast majority of daily events while minimizing changeover time between productions and ensuring consistent operation throughout the theater's high-frequency usage.

Accurate Digital Visualization

To further validate the accuracy of the venue documentation, the entire theater was reconstructed as a three-dimensional digital model in Vectorworks. Every major architectural feature, lighting position, catwalk, truss, and stage element was modeled directly from field measurements, allowing the virtual environment to closely match the physical venue.

 

The comparison below demonstrates the fidelity of the final model. The rendered visualization on the left and the corresponding photograph on the right illustrate how accurately the digital reconstruction represents the existing theater. Beyond serving as a visual reference, the model has become a valuable planning tool for future lighting designs, equipment installations, production planning, and technical communication, significantly improving both design efficiency and project coordination.

From Documentation to Real-World Operation

The project extended well beyond drafting documentation. The finalized House Plot was fully implemented within the ETC Eos lighting control system, transforming the design into a practical operational environment for everyday production use.

A dedicated show file was created for the venue, incorporating channels, patching, palettes, groups, submasters, and a fully customized Magic Sheet designed specifically around the theater's lighting system. Rather than functioning solely as a graphical overview, the Magic Sheet serves as an intuitive operational interface that enables lighting designers and technicians to immediately understand the theater's fixture layout and control architecture, even during their first visit to the venue.

 

The interface was intentionally designed to remain clear, concise, and highly responsive under the time-sensitive conditions common in live entertainment. Strategic use of faders, logical fixture organization, and streamlined navigation allow operators to react quickly to changing production requirements while maintaining efficient control of the entire lighting system. By integrating accurate documentation directly into the console workflow, the project established a seamless connection between venue design, technical documentation, and real-world operation.
